Aloha, brothers! If you, like me, live in Phuket and are facing the issue of renewing your Thai driving license, this article is for you. I handled it all by myself — no agents, no long waiting lists booked 3 months ahead. The entire process took only 4 hours and cost just 105 baht!

If your license has expired and you’re searching the internet for up-to-date info (like I did), give this a like in advance — you won’t find a more detailed step-by-step guide. Let’s go! I’ll break it down into clear stages so you can easily follow along.

Why It’s Important and What You Should Know First

Renewing a driving license in Thailand is not just a formality. Without it, you risk fines, trouble with the police, and even problems in case of accidents. In Phuket, the process is quite simple but requires preparation.

Total cost: ~205 baht (100 for the medical certificate + 105 for the government fee).

Time: 1 hour for the online test + 3 hours at the office.

Who can renew: foreigners with a valid visa and residence certificate.

New license validity: usually 2 years.

Step 1: Prepare Your Documents

This is the foundation of the entire process. Without the full set, they’ll just send you back. I gathered everything in one morning — don’t delay!

  • Passport (original) — your main identification document.
  • Copies of the passport’s main page and current visa — make sure they are clear, preferably in color.
  • Residence certificate — free at the Phuket Immigration Office. Bring an extra copy. (Address: Phuket Immigration)
  • Medical certificate — confirms you’re healthy (vision, reflexes). Costs 100 baht at a clinic in Phuket Town. Recommended place: map link. The process takes about 15 minutes, no queues.
  • Old driving license — mandatory! If you’ve changed your passport and the old license was issued under it, include a copy of your previous passport.

Tip: keep everything in a folder — it saves you from losing papers in the rush.

Step 2: Online Training and Test

Thailand is going digital — now the test is online! That saves a lot of time. I completed it in an hour while drinking coffee.

  1. Register on the website: go to https://dlt-elearning.com/. Create an account (you’ll need an email and passport details).
  2. Watch the video and take the test: watch the traffic rules video (in English or Thai). Then take a 20-question test — you need 80% correct answers to pass. Don’t rush, you can retake it.
  3. QR code: after passing, download or screenshot your QR code. You’ll need to show it at the office — no QR, no entry!

Tip: do this the evening before your visit — the QR code is valid for 30 days.

Step 3: Visit the Office and Get Your New License

This is the “live” part. The office is the Phuket Provincial Transport Office. Go early to avoid long lines.

  1. Address and hours: Phuket Provincial Transport Office. Be there by 8:00 AM (best — 7:30). Look for the far building on the right side of the entrance.
  2. Queue ticket: there’s usually a crowd at the entrance. Sit on the plastic chairs to the left and wait. A staff member will hand out paper queue numbers (in Thai).
  3. Waiting for your number: around 9:30 they start calling people inside. Listen carefully and line up when your number is called.
  4. Document check: show your QR code, they’ll review your papers. They’ll tell you to return at 1:00 PM to window number 5.
  5. Final step at 1:00 PM: reaction and color blindness test (just pressing buttons and naming colors). Pay 105 baht, take a photo — and voilà, your new license is ready!

While waiting, relax and grab a coffee nearby — perfect place to chill.

Tip: bring water and a snack — the morning can be long. If your queue number is high, don’t worry, the process moves fast.

Good luck! If something has changed or you have questions — leave a comment, and I’ll update the guide.
