Getting around in Thailand is much more convenient with your own or rented transport. In cities, narrow streets and a motorbike helps to quickly get to the desired point. Tourist cities are full of signs about renting vehicles. By law, when concluding a contract, the tenant is obliged to present a valid driver’s license. In Thailand, if a bike was not given in one office due to the lack of a driver’s license, you can safely go to a neighboring office and get a vehicle with a copy of your passport.
Why you need a Thai driver’s license
In the Land of Smiles, the situation with driving without a license is quite serious. If a violation is discovered, the driver faces a fine. But it’s not just the fear of parting with money that drives tourists to obtain a local license. There are a few other pleasant benefits:
- Thai rights are valid throughout the entire ASEAN territory.
- With a driver’s license, entry to many national parks or temples/museums will cost significantly less, as it does for a local resident.
- In case of an accident, the license holder is protected by law, but driving without one automatically makes the driver 100% at fault.
- Insurance covers damage only if the driver has a valid driver’s license.
- If category “A” is obtained in Thailand, it is possible to open the motorcycle endorsement in Russia without taking exams.
- Obtaining a license in Thailand is simpler and cheaper than in Russia.
- As of 2018, the law on mandatory 30-hour driving instruction is under consideration. Its adoption has been postponed several times. Only a package of documents and passing exams are required to obtain a driver’s license.
- Any foreigner staying in the kingdom with any type of visa can obtain a driver’s license.

How to get a license in Thailand. Step-by-step instructions
Before going to the Department of Land Transport (DLT), you need to prepare a package of documents:
- original foreign passport;
- copies of the first page and the visa stamp;
- residence certificate;
- medical certificate.
The Residence Certificate must be obtained at the Immigration Police office. Prepare in advance:
- passport;
- 2 photos 3×4 cm;
- copy of the rental agreement;
- copy of the apartment’s documents;
- copy of the landlord’s passport.
The cost of the certificate is 300 Baht ( 9.23 USD). At the counter at the entrance to the Immigration Police office, you need to take a ticket, wait for your turn, and present the documents. The process takes 5 minutes if there are no queues.
The medical certificate can be obtained at any clinic. Say “driver license” at the entrance. After paying 100 ( 3.08 USD)-150 Baht ( 4.62 USD), the certificate is issued without an examination. The process takes 2-3 minutes.
When all documents are ready, it’s time to go to the DLT. Take a ticket at the entrance and present all documents when your turn comes. The officer will issue a ticket with a date for a second visit.
On the appointed day, come to the same building on the second floor. Here, 3 tests will be conducted:
- For color blindness. The test taker’s task is to name the colors shown in English. There are only 3 – yellow, green, and red.
- For depth perception. Using a joystick, you need to align 2 sticks parallel to each other.
- For reaction. Gently press the gas pedal while the green light is on. As soon as the red light comes on, hit the brake.
After passing the tests, there is a video about traffic rules. This is the longest part of the program. It takes 5 hours with a break. The screening is in Thai with English subtitles. The video demonstrates not only traffic rules but also shows accidents and their consequences in great detail.
The next morning, you need to arrive at the training ground on a bike or in a car. Don’t forget your helmet if you are taking the motorcycle driving test. Before the test, get your personal card on the first floor.
After passing the practical test, you need to wait for the supervising inspector’s signature and go up to the second floor to take the theoretical part. If the practical exam is not passed, you can retake it the next day.
After passing the theoretical test, pay the fee on the first floor: 105 Baht ( 3.23 USD) for a bike or 205 Baht ( 6.31 USD) for a car.
Here, the employee will take a photo and issue the ready license. The issuance of the ready document takes 15 minutes.
The first driver’s license is issued for 2 years. Upon expiry, it can be exchanged for a new one, valid for 5 years. This requires the same package of documents and the old license. The theoretical and practical parts do not need to be retaken; only the 3 initial tests must be passed.
IMPORTANT!
- When visiting the Department of Land Transport, the Immigration Police office, or a clinic, observe the dress code. It is not customary to appear in a government institution in a T-shirt and shorts. Cover your knees and shoulders.
- In Pattaya, the queue for exams can reach one and a half months. It is better to obtain the Residence Certificate and medical certificate closer to the appointed date. The validity period of these documents is 1 month. A passport is sufficient to obtain a ticket with the exam date.
- You must arrive at the practical exam on your own transport. Bikes and cars are often rented out by the hour opposite the DLT.
How to exchange a Russian license for a Thai one
A Russian license is not valid in Thailand regardless of whether it is the old or new type.
IDPs (International Driving Permits) are valid in the kingdom, but only if the corresponding category is open. For example, “M” does not allow driving a motorcycle, and low-powered scooters are practically non-existent in the country. Driving a bike requires an open category “A/A1”.
If you do not have an IDP, it is best to take care of it in advance and obtain a Thai driver’s license based on your Russian one before you start driving.
The biggest difficulty of the procedure is visiting the consulate. It is located in Bangkok, which is not very convenient for residents of other cities.
A package of documents is required to exchange an IDP for a Thai version:
- Certified translation of the Russian license at the Russian Consulate. Cost 1100 Baht ( 33.86 USD).
- Residence Certificate. Issued at the Immigration Police office. Cost 300 Baht ( 9.23 USD).
- Medical certificate. Can be obtained at any clinic/hospital. Cost 100 ( 3.08 USD)-150 Baht ( 4.62 USD).
- Passport. Make copies of the first page and the visa stamp in advance.
With the package of documents, you need to come to the Department of Land Transport and receive a Thai license to drive a bike/car.
Passing the theoretical traffic rules test in Thailand
The theory test is taken on computers. There are a total of 50 questions. No more than 5 mistakes are allowed. The exam lasts one hour and is taken in English or Thai.
Important!
- In the tests, questions often repeat and may have several answer options.
- If taking the test for both a bike and a car, the theory must be taken 2 times.
- It is allowed to use a paper dictionary during the exam.
Practical Exam
The practical exam for a car includes:
- Stopping under a sign. No less than a meter before the stop line, no more than 25 cm from the curb.
- Parking. Park in the marked spot, changing gears no more than 7 times and without knocking down any cones.
- Driving on a narrow section of the road. Required to drive forward and backward.
For a motorcycle, the tasks are slightly different:
- Driving course. Follow the signs, show turn signals, and do not forget to put both feet on the ground when stopping.
- Slalom. The distance between the cones is such that this exercise can be easily performed even in a car.
- Driving straight. This test is not mastered by all beginners. It is necessary to drive along a raised track 20 cm wide. It is quite passable with minimal driving experience.
Fine for driving without a license
As of 2018, the fine for driving without a license is no more than 1000 Baht ( 30.78 USD) or a month of imprisonment. When a violation is detected on the spot, the police usually ask for 500 Baht ( 15.39 USD).
The adoption of a law to increase the fine amount to 5,000 Baht ( 153.90 USD) is being considered within 3 months.
What you need to know when traveling in Thailand
- Driving on the right side of the road is unusual (for those used to left-hand drive).
- Thais rarely follow generally accepted rules, such as: not crossing a double solid line or priority at a roundabout.
- Do not trust flashing turn signals. If the left one is on, the driver may turn right. Moreover, if nothing is shown at all, it does not mean they will go straight.
- In Europe, flashing the high beams means “pass quickly, you have time.” In Thailand: “get out of my way! I’m flying!”.
- Funnily enough, showing a signal intending to change lanes automatically reduces the driver’s chances of completing this action. Thais will aggressively accelerate just to avoid letting anyone pass in front of them.
- Remember the distance. Locals do not know about it, so you can often see a chain of 3-7 cars rear-ending each other in one place.
- Local residents use the hazard lights to stop in an unauthorized place.
- You can turn left at an intersection on a red traffic light if there are no prohibiting signs and it does not create an emergency situation.
- Overtaking in the oncoming lane is the norm in Thailand. Be careful.
- New drivers will be comfortable in the kingdom. If a driver gets confused and stops in the middle of the road, they will be driven around without multiple honking. The principle of such stops is smoothness; otherwise, the traffic behind may not have time to react.
- Do not try to drive at high speed in the first few days. As practice shows, all novice drivers fall.
- Do not neglect the helmet when driving a motorbike. It is better to choose one that fully covers the head; baseball cap-style helmets are not as good for protection.
